Some Definitions You May Find Useful

Command – The order from handler to dog, either verbal or signal

Leg – A qualifying score on the way to a title. One might say their dog has two legs toward their CD.

Order – The direction from judge to handler either verbal or signal

Ring Steward – According to the Mission City Stewards Club, the steward is "a judge's assistant who is tasked with coordinating the logistics of getting the exhibitors and their dogs into and out of the rings efficiently.  Stewards are responsible for the smooth operation of their rings, and the comfort of the judges they are assigned to assist."

Terms Specific To Rally

Incorrectly Performed Station – Points will be lost if one or more principal parts of a station is not performed or is performed incorrectly; 10 points if the handler chooses not to retry the station or fails to do it correctly on the retry or 3 points if the handler chooses to retry and performs it correctly.

Principal parts – The underlined and emboldened descriptions of each exercise as provided in the AKC Rally Rule Book which must be completed to get credit for the exercise.  Example: sign#3 Halt, Sit: the description reads "While heeling, the handler halts and the dog sits in heel position. The team then moves forward, with the dog in heel position."  The principal part is the handler halting and the dog sitting, not the heeling up to, or away from, the station.  If the dog does not sit: the principal part of the exercise has not been completed and penalties will be assessed.

Rally Station – The area in which each exercise (via a sign) is displayed for the team to perform.

Repeat of a station – A station repeated in it entirety, including the approach, before beginning the next station costs the team 3 points each time.  The team is only allowed to repeat each station once.

Station not attempted by the handler – A station skipped/missed by the handler before attempting the next station; a missed station equates to a non qualifying score.
