Retrieve on the Flat for Open

The dog and handler, with dumbbell in hand, will face the judge at the opposite end of the ring.  The judge will order the handler to throw the dumbbell, at which time the handler will command and/or signal the dog to stay, and will toss the dumbbell at least 20 feet in front.  The judge will order the handler to "send your dog" at which time the handler will command the dog to retrieve the dumbbell.  The dog is expected to go straight out to the dumbbell, retrieve it, and promptly return to the front of the handler without further direction.  The judge will order the handler to "take it" and to "finish"; the handler will order the dog to release the dumbbell and return to heel position.

Retrieve Over High Jump for Open

This exercise is the same as the flat retrieve, except the handler will toss the dumbbell over a solid panel high jump, set close to shoulder height (16 inches for basenjis under 17 inches tall), in which the dog must jump over to retrieve, then return by back jumping with dumbbell in mouth.  The front, release and finish are the same as the flat retrieve.

The two Open Retrieves are demonstrated here by Linda Siekert and "Feigh".

Directed Retrieve for Utility

The dog and handler will position themselves dead center in the ring facing the judge.  Behind them a ring steward, standing at the left corner of the ring ropes or gates, will place one glove in the left corner, another midway to the right corner, then a third in the right corner.  Upon the judge's order the dog and handler will pivot in unison to face the glove indicated by the judge (glove 1 is on the handlers’ left, glove 2 is dead center, and glove 3 is on the handlers’ right).  The handler will immediately command the dog with a simultaneous verbal and hand signal to retrieve the indicated glove; once retrieved, the dog is expected to front, release and finish.

In Graduate Open the center glove will not be placed, otherwise the exercise is identical to the Utility Directed Retrieve exercise.
