March 27, 2011 BCOA Announcements
|
Dear BCOA Members,
It has been brought to the attention of the BCOA Board there is some concern amongst BCOA members regarding possible changes to the fanconi linkage test. Like all members, the BCOA Board, the BHE Board and the Health & Research (H&R) Committee members are very interested to learn as much as we can, as quickly as we can, to better inform ourselves and the membership.
The BCOA/BHE, along with the H&R Committee takes pride in keeping the general membership apprised of any new information, as it becomes available. Rest assured, we want to know as well - we are all first and foremost members!
As an example, the 2010 report from Dr. Johnson stated in part, as of September 4, 2010, four dogs tested as ‘probable carrier’ whom actually became affected. These four dogs were reported to the general membership in 2010 via:
The BCOA/BHE and H&R Committee are now in possession of a report from an owner that there are three additional tests whose results have changed, making a total of seven (7) questionable results, that we know of, out of at least 3891 dogs tested.
Understandably when an inconsistent result occurs, the lab will methodically look into possible causes: human error, test error, parentage error; to name a few. This additional research creates a lag between the time an odd result is obtained and an official statement from the lab.
The H&R Committee co-chairs have been in contact with Dr. Johnson, the key researcher, with a list of questions compiled by their committee. These questions were presented to Dr. Johnson earlier this week. Dr. Johnson has indicated that it will take at least two weeks for him to answer every question therefore at this time – we have no information to share.
We ask that everyone please extend a little patience while we all await Dr. Johnson's reply. As soon as the BCOA/BHE Board has information, the membership will too.
Thank you.
