Amatangazig of the Congo
Call name: "Zig"
Sire: Unknown African
Health testing and history:
Comments: Zig was featured in Patricia (Byron) Cockburn's book "Figure of Eight" and in Claud Cockburn's book "I Claud . . ." From Veronica Tudor-Williams' 1946 book: "From the time I first saw Amatangazig I admired her, feeling that she possessed just the qualities we required in Basenjis - small size, perfect conformation and extreme daintiness, and finally in 1941 she became my property. She is very small being about 14 1/2 inches at the shoulder, weighing about 15 pounds, exceptionally red in colour, with the finest legs, feet and movement I have yet seen on a Basenji. Perfectly sound, with a very short back and beautiful front and shoulder. Her faults are that her eye is rather round and full, she is lacking in wrinkle and her tail is insufficiently curled."

Litters produced: January 1, 1942 - 1 male and 2 females - Bongo of Blean |
Comments: Male: Tangazig of the Congo -
Females: Zande and Juba. Juba was sometimes called Juba
of the Congo. Juba was bred to Kinga of the Congo in 1945 with three
puppies resulting. The progeny were the females Nyambe of the Congo
and Eng. Ch. Fern of the Congo and a male Eng. Ch. Brown Trout of the
Congo. It was the accidental mating of Brown Trout and Fern which
produced the first tri colors born outside of Africa (Pictured below.
This photo is confusing in its labeling in VTW's books as the dogs
are called the first tri-colors born in the west but then are labeled
with one correct and one incorrect name.). |
June 10, 1942 - 1 female - Bungwa of Blean |
Comments: Female: Zandia of the Congo. Zandia had one pup by Zeppo of the Congo in 1945 and a litter of three by Kinga of the Congo in 1945. |
December 25, 1943 - 3 males and 4 females - Bongo of Blean |
Comments: Males: Zippi of the Congo, Zimbo of the Congo and Zeppo of the Congo - Females: Zala of the Congo, Suki of the Congo, Zephyr of the Congo and Zinnia of the Congo. Zephyr of the Congo had three litters between 1945 and 1949 from these sires: Flash of the Congo (3 puppies), Riviana Dragon Fly of the Congo (five puppies), and Eng. Ch. Black Magic of the Congo (four puppies) Zeppo and Zinnia were exported to the USA and Zinnia became an American champion.
