Qualifying Scores

Every exhibitor walks into an obedience ring with the same perfect score of 200 points. In order to earn a qualifying score however, they must walk out of the ring not having lost more than 30 total points or a score of 170.  They must also earn greater than 50% of the maximum points assigned for each exercise.  As an example the Novice Heel on Leash and Figure 8 exercise is worth 40 total points.  An exhibitor scoring 20 points out of 40 for this exercise will not qualify even if their overall score was greater than 170 points, while an exhibitor scoring 21 points would.

For Rally, one starts the course with a perfect score of 100 points and must leave the course with no less than 70 points in order to qualify. Rally is a timed event with the time being used to break ties for 1st through 4th place.

An exhibitor must earn three (3) qualifying scores (or legs) under at least two different judges to earn the obedience Novice, Open and Utility titles as well as the Rally Novice, Advance and Excellent titles. More advanced titles have more significant requirements - see glossary.

Titles

Obedience

The AKC Novice title is the Companion Dog or CD title (UKC is UCD).
The AKC Open title is the Companion Dog Excellent or CDX title (UKC is UCDX).
The AKC Utility title is the Utility Dog or UD title (UKC is UUD).

An exhibitor can go further and earn an AKC Utility Dog Excellent or UDX title multiple times (the UKC does not have a comparable title) or the most coveted of all, the AKC Obedience Trial Champion or OTCH title (UKC is UOCH).

The first UDX Basenji was Sukari's Akuaba The Hustler UDX SC OA (aka Hustle Baby). The closest any basenji has come to an AKC OTCH is Hustle Baby with 9 of the required 100 points; Hustle Baby was however able to earn the UKC UOCH in July 1996.

UDX – Is earned by qualifying in Open B and Utility B on the same day, ten (10) times. Every time these requirements are met, the exhibitor can add a number to the UDX title. The first and only UDX2 basenji was Aljor's Back To Sonbar UDX2 (aka as Sparky).

OTCH – Is earned by accumulating 100 Championship points; Championship points are earned by winning 1st through 4th place in either the Open B or Utility B class. The number of points earned is based on the number of eligible entries showing that day. Ex: In Open B - 14 to 16 entries would garner the following Championship points: first = 14 points, second = 4 points, third = 1 point and fourth = 0.

In addition to 100 Championship points the exhibitor must also win a first in Utility B with at least 3 dogs competing, a first in Open B with at least 6 dogs competing and an additional first place in either class with similar competition requirements. All three wins must be under different judges.

Unlike AKC, UKC Obedience Championship (UOCH) points are based on an exhibitor’s score, not class placements, with a maximum of 8 Championship points earned by an exhibitor per class. Not having to defeat the more traditional obedience breeds in order to earn Championship points makes the UOCH more obtainable for the independent basenji. However, the UKC exercises, Utility in particular, seem harder than AKC Utility exercises.

In addition to the 100 UKC Championship points, of which 30 must come from Open B, 20 from Utility B, an exhibitor must qualify in both Open B and Utility B on the same day, with a cumulative score of 370 point (or greater) five (5) times.

Rally

The AKC Novice Rally title is the Rally Novice or RN title.
The AKC Advanced Rally title is the Rally Advance or RA title.
The AKC Excellent Rally title is the Rally Excellent or RE title.

RAE – Similar to the UDX, an exhibitor needs to qualify in Advance B and Excellent B on the same day, ten (10) times. Every time these requirements are met, the exhibitor can add a number to the RAE. There are several basenjis with the RAE title but DC Lacada's Con Man K's Kaper CD RAE5 MC MX MXJ AXP AJP XF (aka Kaper) is the only RAE5 basenji. There are no basenjis to date with a UKC Rally title.

Designating Titles

All Obedience and Rally titles follow the dog's registered name except for the OTCH, which precedes a registered name. Examples:

Sam's Benji CD
Sue's Tenji RA or
OTCH Bob's Senji
